IMPORTANT: Do You Ever Read the Ingredient Labels on Body Care Products???
Body Care Ingredients to AVOID: Here is some information that will empower you and bring you closer to who you are meant to be. We've gotten used to hearing people say "read the labels" but when we look at the lables, we have no idea what we are reading! So we purchase these products anyway because we assume that the FDA is watching our back and because T.V. commercials say they're good, or because we have a coupon for it. Who has time to do their research and inspect every single ingredient in a product, right? It will take some time to learn what ingredients to avoid in your body care products but here is a good place to start... keep reading... I've created a list of common ingredients found in body care products that should be avoided. These ingredients are in almost every "mainstream" soap and lotion out there. Its difficult to find products without these ingredients, but they do exist! These ingredients are not labeled as "harmful" by the FDA because you don't see the damage when they are first applied. (and because the FDA is probably paid off by the industries who make them, but that's another story!) The reason these ingredients are harmful is because our skin is an organ, and everything we apply on ourselves gets absorbed through the blood stream and the damage is done very slowly. As these toxic chemicals get accumulated in our body, over time, our body starts rejecting these chemicals in the form of acne, allergies, skin rashes and other illnesses we think are "normal". Here are some of these ingredients: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate- Scientists use this chemical to irritate and pierce through the skin of cell walls. It is a mild irritant but is definitely an irritant, especially on sensitive skin. Over time, these so called moisturizers, strip your skin of its natural moisturizing oils, which lead you to continue purchasing these "moisturizers". Genius! Urea or DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea and Imidazolidinyl Urea- It is a natural ingredient that is manufactured in the liver of mammals which is urine. The synthetic version of urea is derived from salt which can be drying to the skin. This ingredient only relieves the symptoms of dry skin or a rash- but does not get rid of the cause, so the problem never goes away. Cetyl Alcohol and Lanolin Alcohol- These claim to be moisturizing, but again, only gets rid of symptoms temporarily but not the root of the problem. Over time, they dry out the skin by stripping your skin of its natural oils. Synthetic Fragrance or anything called fragrance- The only real true and natural fragrances are extracts from trees, plants or flowers or essential oils, also derived from trees, plants or flowers. Anything else called "fragrance" has been created in a laboratory with chemicals. Extracts and essential oils are the only safe and natural way to scent body care products. There are non-toxic frangrances out there, but will usually not mention how it is made, or what ingredients are used. Here is a list of a few more ingredients to AVOID: Parabens Phthalates methylbenzene or phenylmethane Propylene glycol Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA), Monoethanolamine (MEA) Triclosan Hope this was helpful! Check out the ingredient labels on the back of your body care products. Unfortunately, you will find 2 or more of these ingredients in them, (unless you've already educated yourself on this). By educating ourselves on using safe body care products and avoid purchasing the ones with harmful ingredients, big businesses will start noticing and will hopefully stop creating products with these ingredients. Until then, read the labels, visit your local farmers market and support independent shops and retailers who support and carry safe and natural products! By being aware of this, you are now empowered... PLEASE CONTACT ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE REGARDING THIS INFORMATION. I ALSO WELCOME ANY ADDITONAL INFORMATION YOU THINK I SHOULD ADD TO THIS BLOG- BY WORKING TOGETHER WE BECOME MORE KNOWLEDGABLE... Happy 2012 to everyone! I am excited to share new content and new essential oil journeys with you. I am freshly renewed with new baby, new intentions and a new state of mind and would love to keep these fresh perspectives going... Magical Aromatherapy I would like to offer a special opportunity to join me in sharing my aromatherapy journey with you. I have come a long way on my essential oil path and these powerful little aroma guides have led me into this point in my life where I am now urged to share their message with you. I am creating a 6 week online essential oil guide called Magical Aromatherapy- this and other new products will be ready in Spring 2012. New Year Ritual: I did this ritual 2 years ago and I loved it. Although some of us have already created our 2012 intentions during the new moon, I thought it would be nice to do this ritual as well, to continue the momentum. If you are reading this after Jan. 1st, this is also a great practice for setting intentions during the new moon: On a sheet of paper, write out all of the things from the current year that you've outgrown, no longer want in your life, no longer work for you, and anything else you feel you want to shed and leave behind. On a separate piece of paper, write all of the things you can think of and feel that you want to grow and expand in the new year. Then burn each paper in separate dishes or shells, making sure all pieces are turned to ashes. Then, when cooled, put them into separate envelopes or containers (film canister, Ziploc baggie, etc.) and mark "to shed" and "to grow" on the container. Around 5 minutes before midnight, start visualizing all the things on the "to shed" list, and see them slip away, see them blown away and washed away, out of your energy field, out of your life and out of your reality. Then go outside and pour the "to shed" ashes into your hand and let the wind scatter the ashes away and release them and all they represent, as the old year fades away. After midnight, after blessing the new year, with the second container "to grow", visualize all of these goals, desires, etc. coming to fruition, to this level of reality. I bring that envelope down to the garden, and with a stick dig a small hole, then plant these ashes in the earth, near a tree or in a special place, (for those in apartments, I encourage them to use their favorite houseplant). The ashes are a reminder of the life cycle, the power of nature and the honoring of Mother Earth, that these seeds of hopes and dreams are nurtured into reality, in the coming year. You may want to try this and tweak it and do it a way that suits you. -Taken from Jennifer McLean of Masterworks Healing May you all have a blessed transition into the new year, radiating with an abundance of vibrant health, love and powerful connections~ Betty |
